Ivy care

The pothos plant (Scindapsus) Epipremnum belongs to the Araceae family as well as the Caladium, Dieffenbachia, Monstera and the Philodendron. The Greek name for the Epipremnum Ivy is Epipremnum Pinnatum, but it is better known as Epipremnum Ivy. The Epipremnum comes from the jungles of Southeast Asia. In the jungle the leaves can grow up to 90 cm. In the jungle, the ivy grows in the shade as a climbing plant. The ivy plant has many different color variants.

In Greek the name Epipremnum means Epi (on) Premnum (stem) as the ivy grows as a climbing plant. The Greeks believe that the owner of the ivy plant gets good luck and yellow.

The ivy is in the top 10 of most air-purifying plants. There are small stomata on the leaves of the ivy that purify the air as they remove pollutants from the air. The ivy will use the pollutants as food. No harmful gases or waste products are produced during this process.

Ivy Planting

The soil of the ivy plant should always be moist and must not dry out completely. However, no water should collect at the bottom of the pot. To help you check the moisture in the soil, you can stick your fingers into the soil to feel whether the soil is still moist. With new plants, it is important to check them regularly so that you can get to know the water requirements of the plant.

The water requirement depends on several factors: pot size, relationship between plant and pot size, light intensity, temperature, season and size of the houseplant. If the soil is still completely wet after 4 days, you need to water less.

The water requirement of the ivy is lower in winter because the temperature is lower and there is less sunlight.

Water system

You can use vulcastrate but the amount of water you need will change. Watering once a week should be enough. Water until the water level indicator moves and then stop watering. If the water level indicator moves, it means the houseplant has enough water. It is best to stop watering just before the water level indicator moves. In winter it is enough to water once every 2 weeks.

Spraying

The ivy only needs to be sprayed to remove the dust. This will promote the ornamental value of the plant.

Ivy light and warmth

The Efeutute Epipremnum is a houseplant that loves a spot in partial sun or light but does not like direct sunlight. If the Epipremnum ivy is placed in a place with more shade, the leaves become greener and darker. The brighter the spot, the more different colors the leaves of the ivy have. If the leaves turn green, it means the plant requires more light.

The ivy plant, just like people, doesn't like drafts. Try to avoid pulling.

Repotting Ivy

So that the ivy plant can continue to develop well, you can repot the ivy plant every 2 to 3 years. In this way, the ivy plant gets new nutrients, more space for the roots and loose soil. The best time to repot the Epipremnum is in spring or immediately after purchase. You can use universal potting soil.

Fertilizing Ivy

The Epipremnum needs liquid fertilizer every 2 weeks in spring and summer. You do not need to fertilize in autumn and winter. When fertilizing, always make sure that you do not fertilize the houseplant as directed on the package, as too much fertilizer will kill the plant.

Ivy care

Discolored leaves

If the leaves of the Epipremnum become a dark green color, it means that the plant is not getting enough light. In order for the plant to have more beautiful leaves, it should be placed more in the light.

Since the Epipremnum gets nutrients from the air, it sometimes happens that it has excess nutrients, which are then sweated out. These sweat drops are not poisonous. If the plant receives less water, less sweat will form.

Cut

There are no special rules to consider when cutting the Epipremnum ivy. You can simply cut away branches that are too long. If the Epipremnum is growing on a moss stick, you can use paper clips, for example, to attach the branches to the stick so that the plant looks nice and big.

Breed

Cuttings can be used to propagate ivy plants. Cut cuttings 8 to 10 cm from the leaf. Insert the cuttings 2 to 3 cm into moist soil. Place the cuttings in a warm and bright spot, out of direct sunlight. In about 3 weeks, roots will form and the new plant will begin to grow.

Ivy blossoms

Unfortunately, the ivy Epipremnum is not blooming.

Poisonous

The Efeutute Epipremnum is slightly poisonous if eaten.

Diseases

The Epipremnum ivy is strong and not sensitive to certain diseases or pests
